Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about volunteering with us in Tanzania

Got Questions? We Have Answers

Find answers to the most common questions about our volunteer programs, accommodation, visas, safety, and more.

Do I need prior experience?

No, you do not need prior experience for most of our volunteer programs. We welcome volunteers of all skill levels and provide orientation and training upon arrival. Whether you're a student, gap year traveler, or professional looking to give back, there's a place for you. Some specialized programs (such as medical placements) may require relevant qualifications or experience.

What is the minimum age?

The minimum age for our standard volunteer programs is 18 years old. Volunteers aged 16-17 may participate with written parental consent and in programs approved for younger volunteers. We also offer family volunteer programs where children under 16 can participate alongside a parent or guardian in age-appropriate activities.

How long can I volunteer?

Our programs range from 1 week to 24 weeks. We recommend a minimum stay of 2 weeks to make a meaningful impact and truly immerse yourself in the culture. Longer placements (4-12 weeks) allow you to build deeper relationships and contribute more significantly to our projects. Internship placements are typically 4-24 weeks.

What does the fee include?

Our program fees include:

  • Accommodation (shared volunteer house or host family)
  • Three meals per day
  • Airport pickup and drop-off
  • Pre-departure support and orientation
  • In-country 24/7 support from local staff
  • Program placement and coordination
  • Cultural immersion activities
  • Certificate of completion

Fees do not include flights, visa costs, travel insurance, or personal expenses.

Do I need a visa?

Yes, most international volunteers will need a visa to enter Tanzania. Most nationalities can obtain a visa on arrival at the airport or apply for an e-Visa online before departure at visa.immigration.go.tz. The standard tourist visa costs approximately $50 USD and is valid for 90 days. We recommend applying for a volunteer-specific visa if available. Check with your local Tanzanian embassy for specific requirements for your nationality.

Is Tanzania safe?

Tanzania is one of the safest countries in East Africa for travelers and volunteers. The local people are known for their warmth and hospitality. Our organization takes safety seriously with 24/7 in-country support, secure volunteer accommodation, and regular check-ins. We provide comprehensive safety briefings upon arrival. As with any travel, we advise volunteers to exercise common sense, avoid walking alone at night, and keep valuables secure.

What vaccinations do I need?

We recommend the following vaccinations: Hepatitis A & B, Typhoid, Tetanus/Diphtheria, and Rabies (if working with animals). Yellow Fever vaccination may be required='required' if traveling from a yellow fever endemic country. Malaria prophylaxis is strongly recommended — consult your travel clinic for the best antimalarial medication. Please visit your doctor or travel health clinic at least 6-8 weeks before departure.

Can I volunteer with a friend?

Absolutely! We encourage friends, couples, and groups to volunteer together. You can share accommodation, explore together during free time, and support each other throughout the experience. Group discounts may be available for teams of 3 or more. Contact us for special group rates and we'll help coordinate your placement.

What is the accommodation like?

Volunteers stay in our shared volunteer house in Kilimanjaro or with approved host families in the community. The volunteer house has shared bedrooms (2-4 volunteers per room), common areas, kitchen facilities, and reliable WiFi. Host family stays offer deeper cultural immersion. All accommodation is clean, safe, and comfortable.床ding and breakfast options are also available upon request.

Are meals provided?

Yes, three meals per day are included in your program fee. Meals are freshly prepared and feature a mix of local Tanzanian cuisine and international dishes. We accommodate dietary requirements including vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free diets — just let us know your preferences before arrival. During volunteer house stays, meals are prepared by our cook. Host family placements include all meals with the family.

Can I travel during my placement?

Yes! Most programs run Monday to Friday, leaving weekends free for exploration. Many volunteers take weekend trips to Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Kilimanjaro, or Zanzibar. We can help arrange safaris and excursions at discounted rates. For longer trips during your placement, please coordinate with your program coordinator in advance to ensure smooth continuity.

Will I receive a certificate?

Yes, all volunteers who complete their placement receive an official Certificate of Completion from Janeth Ringo Adventure Volunteers. This certificate details your program, duration, and responsibilities. It can be used for university credit, professional development, or as proof of volunteer experience for future employment or academic applications.

How do I get to Tanzania?

The main international airports are Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR) in Dar es Salaam and Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) near Kilimanjaro/Moshi. Most volunteers fly into JRO as it's closest to our programs. From JRO, we provide complimentary airport pickup. If flying into DAR, domestic connections to Kilimanjaro are available by flight (1 hour) or bus (8 hours). We can assist with travel planning.

  • Comfortable, modest clothing (shoulders and knees covered for community visits)
